Course Overview

• Session 1

  Speech and Language Development

  Participants will define the array of skills that come together to form communication, when these skills develop in the neurotypical population and what this means for children who may be developing language differently.

• Session 2

  Setting up for Success

  Participants will evaluate the language landscape of their early
  learning centre, and share how they will harness technology to create new, inclusive opportunities for language learning through child-led exploration.

• Session 3

  Playful Yet Intentional Teaching and Learning

  Participants will describe 4 key strategies to facilitate language
  learning and give examples of how they will implement these practices within play experiences, transitions, routines and rituals.

• Session 4

  Enhancing Partnerships with Families

  Participants will identify the communicative strengths of children they support and share these insights in observations and reflections. Participants will identify how and when to initiate sensitive conversations with parents while maintaining a sense of belonging and wellbeing.

• Session 5

  Dynamic Assessment and Scaffolding of Language

  Participants will take a strengths based approach to intentional scaffolding and extension of language within child-led experiences. Participants will adapt small group experiences to embed individualised learning goals for children that require additional communication support.
